Stretch The Sangean

What You Need

  1. One of the following:- Sangean ATS-803A, Matsui MR-4099, Realistic DX440, Siemens RK651, Emerson 803A, Ambassador 2020, Clairtone.
  2. A smoothed-output, voltage-regulated DC power supply with output voltage of 4.5V. (And 9V if you want to use it to run the receiver normally).

Power Supply Considerations

I recommend using only a decent-quality, voltage-regulated unit with a smooth output.  Unregulated supplies can damage electronic equipment.  Power supplies which produce hum will cause reception problems on this type of receiver.

Although basic 'wall wart' power supplies are cheap and easily found, I would not recommend them for use with the Sangean, or any equipment you value.

Here is an example of what to avoid:

Basic wall wart

This wall wart is just a transformer, a rectifier
and a partly-effective smoothing capacitor.

You can now buy  more advanced wall warts which offer a regulated output.  Radio Shack™ sell them in the US; Maplin have them in the UK.

This is the power supply I use:

Regulated supply

It's capable of supplying 1.2A.  Plenty for the Sangean.

For the Matsui MR-4099 the output connector needs to be of the 5mm diameter hollow type, with the centre negative.
